Diane carried a tray with two plates, each with a single cookie, to Toby's room, where he was hanging out with a friend. She opened the door to see Toby sitting cross-legged on the floor, a small cup of apple juice in his left hand and a small plate of crumbs in front of him. Across from him was another plate of crumbs and a full cup of apple juice sitting on the ground, these were for Joey, Toby's imaginary friend.
"Alright, boys, here you go," Diane said setting the plates in front of the two.
"Oh, boy, more cookies!" Toby said excitedly, snatching up his cookie and taking a sizable bite.
Diane giggled lightly to herself. "Yep, but those are the last two for today, you two have already had enough sweets to last a lifetime!" To this, Toby chuckled softly and scarfed down the last of his cookie as Diane placed the two empty plates on her tray. "Wow," she said, picking up the newly emptied plate and plopping it upon her tray, "you sure eat quickly."
Toby smiled, then asked, "Can me and Joey lay Squad Commander now?"
"Not until you finish your homework."
"But that will take the rest of the night!" he whined.
"I'm sorry, Toby, but rules are rules. Finish your homework, brush your teeth, then go to bed," she responded firmly.
"Can Joey at least spend the night?"
"You know the rules, tomorrow's a school night."
"But..." Toby started to protest, but was interrupted by Diane.
"No but's, Toby, now get to work. And Joey, you should go home before your mother starts to worry."
She picked up the last of the dishes, set them on her tray, then left the room, shutting the door behind her.
As she left she heard an argument breakout between Toby and Joey. She stopped to listen.
"I know, Joey, but she said...I know, but...rules are rules."
The arguing seemed to cease, but just as Diane began walking away when a loud CRASH echoed from Toby's room, followed by another.
Diane rushed back to see Toby scolding Joey. A glass cup filled with apple juice had been thrown at the wall above Toby's dresser, along with a cookie carried upon a glass plate.
"Toby!" Diane yelled, "What did you do?!"
"It wasn't me! It was Joey, I swear!"
"Go get a broom and dust pan for me, and watch out for the broken glass," she said making her way to the scene of the crime. Toby ran to fetch the things his mother requested.
Diane knelt on the ground, picking up the larger pieces of glass and setting them on the tray. Shortly after, Toby returned with the needed items.
"Thank you, Toby," she said, taking the broom and dust pan from him. "Now tell Joey to go home and go do your homework on the kitchen table."
Toby nodded and left the room.
As his mother cleaned up the room, Toby spoke to Joey.
"Why'd you do that?...I know, but that doesn't mean you can just...You're finger is bleeding, let's go heal it for you." Toby led Joey to the bathroom.
Once there, Toby tore off a piece of toilet paper. "Here you go, Joey," Toby said, grabbing his imaginary friend's wrist, "this will make you feel better." He dabbed at Joey's non-existent finger.
"There, isn't that better?" he asked as he finished cleaning his friends wound.
The toilet paper was stained red with blood. Real blood.
Toby calmly threw it away.
This is Chapter 1 of the first book of the new trilogy I'm writing. This will also probably be the only chapter I will post, since I would like to get the book published and keep readers in suspense. Please leave any feedback, recommendations, etc. in the comments and I'll be sure to read them all.

The mother brings 2 plates but it becomes apparent that there is one person, although she speaks as though there are two. At first it seems as though she is coping with an individual who has a mental illness, or patiently accepting of her son's imaginary friend and the antics ascribed to him.

What makes this interesting and brings it to a whole new level of "what in the world" is how Joey moves from dabbing his imaginary friend's non-existent finger with some toilet paper, to throwing away a bloody piece of the same. Now this raises some questions. How did he go from dabbing a non-existent finger, to having blood? Did he dab a nonexistent finger while holding his own bleeding hand? Did his mother hurt herself and follow him and he acted as he usually did?

I'm sure that was your intent, so good job on that.
